When, why and how did the label “entrepreneur” become a status symbol? No judgement, just truly curious, I even wear this label. It’s sexy, there is some mystery to it. We get to say we are four syllables of perceived “awesomeness” without having to go into the glorious or gory details of what that word looks like in our lives. Lets be honest here, we use this to describe our children when they set up a lemonade stand all the way to the self made millionaire. They share the common trait of 100% responsibility for the ventures success or failure, so by definition the label fits in spite of the vast stream of investment in the middle.
So, back to my original question, Why is it a status symbol to say “I am an entrepreneur!”? Why do we stop there? Why don’t we give a little more detail about our creativity, what we do and who we really are? Why do we stop at a word that is just too big and broad to encapsulate our true genius? Is this our way of playing small, or are we feeling small and this word makes us feel bigger? Wouldn’t it be great if we could add “igist” to the end, all “great” people’s professions end in “igist” Right? I am an “entrepreneurigist”, now that sounds “important”? What are you without the “igist”? What is your true specialty? What are you doing behind the labels, marketing and word play?
What about the “reality” of all this entrepreneurial “stuff”? What about the honest truth that you may be failing miserably but refusing to give up on your dream? Let’s chat about the hours you are putting in, the fears that keep you up at night, the fact that you cashed in your life savings, your credit cards are maxed and you are questioning your decision. Your determination to keep everything afloat while you juggle real life and a dream. The fact that you are working for your salary from 9-5 and your “venture” from 5-9 has your feet in two boats, but, you are walking on water, Right? That’s the juicy stuff, the truth, and the beauty that gives you even more clout in wearing that label. In spite of the struggle there is a commitment to what is serving as purpose right now and that deserves some recognition. But, is the label “entrepreneur” really enough? Can you give us some more? Can you be a little more vulnerable? Can you tell us more of your story?
Why you are buying thousands of dollars on internet based marketing programs, signing up for another MBA, taking on this new project, or buying another self-help book? What if there is no recognition? What if no one buys it, likes it or you are criticized? Will you still do it, will you still create, be seen, show up and play?
When you remove the label entrepreneur and start to describe the details of what you really do what happens within you?
I am not going to answer any of these questions for you. I am going to hold steady in my coaching chair. Why are you wearing the label “entrepreneur” as a status symbol? Again, no judgement, this is about self defining what you truly do, why you do it, and provoking a move toward the truest vision of who you really are outside of the status that comes with the word entrepreneur.
You are more than a word, more than a label and you are enough right now. Make your living, have gratitude in what you have already designed in your life. If there is a desire that moves you to tears, creates butterflies in your tummy and makes your soul scream then birth it.
Create because you want to, connect with the universe from your soul, contribute all your gifts and lets celebrate who we are at our core, label free and without and need to be anything but who we really are.
Now go create, make your fortune, change the world, and stay rooted in who you really are…from one entrepreneur to another!
